Hello! I am so excited to teach at Shakerag. Here's a little about me...

• Favorite food?    Cheez-its!

• Favorite drink?    Coffee!

• Where are you from?     I grew up in Florida, moved to Gwinnett in 2007, and graduated from the University of Georgia - Go Dawgs!

• What are your hobbies? I love to read, paint and cook. Whenever I can, I love to travel to nearby cities for football games or hiking :) 

 

My teaching philosophy:

• I firmly believe that effective learning begins first with community. In my classroom, I emphasize the importance of compassion for others as well as the social skills needed to connect with others. Almost as imperative, I allow for student choice whenever possible. For example, hard-working students are encouraged to sit where they'd like in the room. Student choice also emerges when I plan my lessons. I know how important it is to choose books and activities my class will enjoy.

 

What will we learn this year?

• In reading, your student will learn the skills needed to read a book with comprehension, accuracy, and fluency. In addition, we will use those skills to expand our vocabulary. 

• In writing, we will learn to think highly of ourselves as writers. We will practice writing freely for fun, editing our work to show off our brain power, sharing our work with an audience, and enjoying the writing process! 

 

How will homework be given?

• Nightly, I expect all students to read for a minimum of 10 minutes. I encourage students to build stamina and read for 15 - or even 20 minutes! Your student will fill out a reading log nightly, and answer comprehension questions as well.

• In addition, students are expected to study their spelling words nightly.

• Finally, for extra practice, students are encouraged to log into iRead once or twice a week. iRead is an excellent computer/iPad program designed to differentiate reading instruction for your child.
