*Science- Matter!
- Quiz on Wednesday
*What are the three basic states of matter? (solid, liquid, gas)
*What 2 properties do ALL matter have? (takes up space, has mass)
* What is the shape of each form of matter?
(solid-has its own shape, liquid-take shape of container, gas- spreads out to fill space)
* Give an example of each type of matter
-Ask your child:
How can a balloon or beach ball be used to prove gas takes up space and has mass?
How can a tissue in a cup stay dry under water?
Can the same VOLUME of liquid look different in different containers?
*Reading- This week we began studying nonfiction books. We learned to use the Table of Contents to help us predict what we will learn in the text. We learned that headings can help us determine the main idea of each chapter of a book. Next week we’ll continue to identify the main idea of a paragraph and pinpoint supporting details that reinforce the main idea. Ask your child about the main idea and supporting details when reading non-fiction bag books together.
*Writing/Grammar- We will begin our informational writing unit next week. Students will be writing “All About” books, writing about topics they know a lot of information about. We will begin the unit by brainstorming different topics students are interested in (matter, sharks, ballet, etc) and deciding on 3 big ideas to talk about for that topic (i.e. Matter= solids, liquids, gases). Have your child brainstorm something they know a lot about… or maybe even check out a book from the Media Center to learn new things.
Spelling - We will have our next spelling test will not be until Thursday October 18th (due to the two short school weeks). Your child should have received their new spelling words today.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Barbra Mitchell and Rebecca Henschel
