Dear Parents,

Thank you to those who were able to make it to Parent – Teacher Night. We hope that you found it helpful. If you have not yet signed up for a conference and would like one, please do so at: https://bit.ly/2vS3Odl

NOTES:

* 8/28 PICTURE DAY

* 8/30 COMMUNITY/SPIRIT NIGHT-One Thursday each month is designated Community Night and no homework is assigned in our local elementary, middle and high schools. All Shakerag students, teachers, parents, family and friends are encouraged to show their school spirit at our first Spirit Night by dining at Chick-fil-A Johns Creek, 5 - 8pm. It will be fun for the kids to see their friends out and a percentage of sales for that night will benefit our school.

* 8/31 SIGNED PAPERS-please review the papers with your child. Sign the attached form and return ALL PAPERS to school the following school day.

*MATH 2.1 (on)- This week we practiced counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 1000 and looking for patterns in the ones place when we skip count. Some of us challenged ourselves by skip counting backwards. Next week, we will focus on writing three digit numbers in standard (24), expanded (20+4), word (twenty-four), and base-ten block forms (ll ::). We will also relate different forms of value to the digits according to their place. (500= 5 hundreds = 50 tens = 500 ones)

*MATH 2.2 (adv)- This week we practiced addition with regrouping and adding 3 numbers with regrouping. Next week, we will extend this by adding four or more numbers and subtracting with and without regrouping

*SOCIAL STUDIES- Unit 1- Before there was a Georgia

The Compass Rose song:

Ask your children:

What are some landforms found in Georgia? (ex: mountain, valley, plateau, ridge, plains, coast)

Can you describe them?

How many regions are in Georgia?

*READING- We will continue reviewing the CAFÉ strategies such as: back up & reread, check for understanding, tune in to interesting words, cross checking, and voracious reading (ask your child what that means). We are completing BAS (Benchmark Assessment System) over the next couple of weeks. Once I have an updated reading level, students will begin to bring books home to read. Until then, have students read a book of choice or listen to you read each night.

*SPELLING - Today your child was given their first set of spelling words (check their agendas). The phonetic pattern for this week is: short a and o and long a and o (with the help of silent e).

For example: can (short a sound) and cane (long a sound with silent e). Our students will be tested on their spelling words next Thursday, August 30th.

*WRITING- We are working on writing a small moment story. Students are learning how to stretch out this small moment by adding details such as actions, feelings, and dialogue.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Henschel henschelra@fultonschools.org
