Dear Parents,

We have had another great week in 2nd grade!

Notes for this week:

*No school Monday January 21st (MLK Holiday)

Congratulations to our super sharks –

Ryan Lee and Chris An!

Two fintastic shark tickets were also pulled in each of our classes.

Ms. Henschel’s class winners were Connor Liu and Sophie Gray.

Ms. Mitchell's fintastic sharks were Ava Dev-Patel and Naisha Chaurasia.

Congratulations to our fintastic Sharks!

As the weather begins to get cooler, and students are wearing coats/jackets/hats and/or gloves, it is extremely helpful if your child’s name is written inside.

*Signed papers were sent home. Please sign and return slip keeping all papers attached.

Report cards were also sent home in your child’s blue folder. Please be sure to take the report card out of the envelope, sign the envelope on the line that says “2nd Nine Weeks Report Card” and return the envelope on Monday.

*In Math 2.1 (on)- we are currently in UNIT 3: Understanding Measurement, Length, and Time. This past week we learned about customary (standard) measurements such as inches, feet and yards. Students practiced measuring different classroom items with a ruler using inches. Students are learning how to determine which tool to use for measurements. For example, should we use a ruler to measure the height of a tree or would a tape measure be more efficient? Next week we will focus on centimeters and other metric measurements.

- *Math 2.2 (Adv)- This past week we wrapped up our Unit 6- Developing multiplication by finishing up our Unit test. We began Unit 1 for 3rd grade – Numbers and Operations in Base Ten by learning rounding to the nearest 10. Students will also practice rounding to the nearest 100 in the coming week.

*Science-EROSION PBL (project based learning) - Students have been working hard in formulating ideas that will remedy our playground erosion problem. Some students will be making scale models of their solution while others are making google slides. Please ask your child if there are any materials that they are thinking about using for their project. Some students have already brought in shoeboxes and poster board. We will be working on our projects within the next week as well as practicing our presentation skills.

*Reading- In reading, we have reviewed our classroom expectations. Students practiced Daily 5 and were reminded of our Daily 5 expectations (staying on task, working hard to not distract classmates, etc.) Next week, we will learn about Folktales.

*Writing/Grammar- In writing, we created New Year’s resolution projects. Check Seesaw soon to see our finished products!

Looking ahead please mark your calendars for January 21st. We will have no school on this date due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

Sincerely,

Barbra Mitchell and Rebecca Henschel
