Dear Parents,

We have had another great week in 2nd grade!

Notes for this week:

*No School Monday, January 21st (MLK Holiday)

*Our school dance is this Friday. Blue papers went home this afternoon with more info if you would like to attend!

*Math 2.1 (on)-UNIT 3: Understanding Measurement, Length, and Time

This past week we learned about customary (standard) measurements: centimeters and meters. Students practiced measuring different classroom items with a ruler using centimeters.

Students measured their height in both centimeters and inches and created a line plot with the data. We then we compared line plots. Students are continuing to practice which measuring tool they would use to measure different items. Students are recognizing that to measure a ball, we would have to use a tape measure instead of a ruler, for example.

If you have a tape measure at home, please let your child practice measuring things with it.

Next week we will be working on creating and interpreting line plots. We are also continuing FAST FACTS practice with addition facts each Monday. Students are working on fluently answering 25 addition questions within 2 minutes.

*Math 2.2 (Adv)- Unit 1 for 3rd grade – NUMBERS AND OPERATIONS IN BASE TEN

This past week we practiced rounding to the nearest 10 and rounding to the nearest 100. Students will be learning why we round and estimate numbers and in what situations this would be useful.

*Science- Unit 2: Force and Motion EROSION PBL (project based learning) – We will be wrapping up our Erosion PBL next week. The students are so excited to be working in groups to create videos, models, books or google slides to showcase their ideas for fixing our playground erosion problem. Thank you for sending in supplies for your child to work on in class. We are learning about presentations and what makes a successful one (knowing your material, eye contact, speaking loudly and clearly). Students will be presenting their ideas to other students beginning next week.

*Reading- In reading, we have begun learning about folktales. Next week, we will also learn about fables. We have learned that folktales are fictional stories from other countries or cultures, usually about good versus evil. We have read stories from many cultures this week!

*Writing/Grammar- In writing, we will be finishing our “Gripping Narratives” unit this week. Students will take a post test for this unit on Wednesday. They do not need to study for this test, but they may want to begin thinking of new story ideas.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Barbra Mitchell & Rebecca Henschel
