Please be sure to read the newsletter sent below. We are planning on having our Social Studies Unit test this Friday, September 14th and Monday, September 17th.
We have been learning about the Landforms and Regions of Georgia for some time now. We played a charades type game where we create a landform with our hands and our partner has to guess which landform we are making. (Mountain, Valley, Canyon, Ridge, Coast, Plain, Plateau, Rolling Hills). Students then learned about which landforms where in which region of Georgia. The Coastal Plain has a coastline and is mostly flat land. Students also colored maps and read Social Studies Magazines about Georgia. I know in third grade, the students will be asked to differentiate between plants, animals, and habitats found within Georgia’s geographic regions.
Students will get to make salt-dough models of the Georgia Regions this week. I was hoping to do this last week but fell sick with the flu--not fun. Students will construct the Coastal plain as flat land, the Piedmont with rolling hills, the Blue Ridge mountains with Mountains and Ridges,
the Ridge and Valley region with Ridges and Valleys and the Appalachian plateau with Plateaus

*Social Studies- Before There Was a Georgia
-We are wrapping up this unit with a discussion about Georgia’s important rivers. We will review for our unit test using our regions and landforms packets which will also go home so you can help your child study. Our unit test will be on Friday, Sept. 14 th and Monday, Sept. 17th for TAG students.
*Reading- We will learn and practice the comprehension strategy, “Ask questions, before, during and after reading.” Since reading is thinking, good readers should ask themselves questions about a story, before, during and after reading. For example: “Who is this story about?” “What is the problem of the story?” “Where is the story happening?” “Why is the character feeling happy or sad?” You can practice this strategy at home when reading with your child.
*Writing- We are continue to work on our small moment story. We are working on making our story “come to life” by making our characters move and talk. We are also working going back and re-reading to edit and revise our writing.
Phonics/Spelling: The next spelling quiz on short and long I and U is Thursday, September 13th.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Henschel (henschelra@fultonschools.org)
