Dear Parents,
Notes for this week:
10/12- signed papers come home
10/16- Picture Retakes
10/19- Report Cards will be sent home
We had our Strong 4 Life Pep Rally today. Ask your child if they can tell you 4 ways to get strong 4 life (1- drink more water, 2- half your plate should be fruits and veggies, 3- limit screen time, 4- be active). Next week, each child will receive a water bottle and t-shirt to encourage and remind them to be Strong 4 Life.
Note to Parents:
We have seen an increase in the number of toys being brought to school by the students. This includes Pokemon cards and Digital watches (that can take pictures, videos and play games). Please refrain from sending these items to school.
*Math 2.1 (on)-UNIT 2: Becoming Fluent With Addition and Subtraction
-Unit 1 test scores are included in signed papers today
-This week:
*Addition Strategies: commutative property (order doesn’t matter 3+4=4+3), counting on (start from the larger number (3+7= 7-8-9-10), doubles (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4) work on memorizing these, near doubles (4+5= 4+4=8+1=9 or 5+5=10-1=9)
* Word Problem Strategies
*STANDARD: By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. AND Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. Fluently means with accuracy (correct answer), efficiency (within 4-5 seconds), and flexibility (choosing and using strategies). Please practice facts 5 minutes each night. Start with doubles and then move on to near doubles.
-Next week:
*continue with addition and subtraction fluency strategies
**Parent letters for each unit can be found on https://mitchellb4.wixsite.com/shakerag2ndgrade/math
.
*Math 2.2 (Adv)-UNIT 5: Understanding Plane and Solid Figures
-Unit 4 test scores are included in signed papers today
-This week:
*Identifying and naming 2D shapes
-Next Week:
*classifying polygons
**Parent letters for each unit can be found on https://mitchellb4.wixsite.com/shakerag2ndgrade/math
*Science- Matter!
- Vocabulary: physical change, assemble, disassemble
-Does the amount of matter change when you change the shape, assemble or disassemble something?
*Reading- We continue to practice the main idea and supporting details of non-fiction texts this week and next. Students have learned that the heading can help us determine the main idea. The standard for 2nd grade states that students must know the main idea of a multi paragraph text, and the focus of each paragraph. Children’s magazines and National Geographic for Kids are great resources for practicing main idea. We will also continue looking at various text features (table of contents, diagram, bold words, headings, subheadings, glossary, index) and how they help us read nonfiction texts!
*Writing- This week students began writing “All About” books. They are writing about topics they have a lot of information about. Students are learning how to write a Table of Contents to help them break their topic into smaller parts. For example, a student may write a topic about matter. In this case the student may want to break their topic into chapters or pages that might include: an introduction, a page on solids, a page on liquids, a page on gases, and a conclusion.
We will have our next spelling test on Thursday October 18th. Spelling lists were given out last week.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Henschel and Barbra Mitchell
