Dear Parents,
Notes for this week:
*Please be sure that your child is not coming to school with Pokemon cards or other toys.
*Just a reminder…..There is no school for students this Tuesday, November 6th.
*If you haven’t already done so, please sign and return your child’s field trip form for the upcoming field trip on Wednesday, November 14th.
Please donate to the Shakerag School Thanksgiving Food Drive. Send non-perishable food items such as canned and boxed foods, noodles, rice, canned/jarred gravy, flour and other baking ingredients.
*Math 2.1 (on)-UNIT 2: Becoming Fluent With Addition and Subtraction
-We are practicing math calculations and word problems with missing addends. Students will also be practicing math fluency with drills of doubles and doubles plus one in the coming weeks. These math drills will not be graded. Students will also continue to practice adding mixed groups of coins as well as answering money word problems. The students should first sort them, then line them up from highest value to find to lowest, then skip count to find the total value. *Please practice at home as well. Using real money is the best. You can give your child a handful of coins from your purse, pocket, or coin jar. If you want to give them incentive, tell them they can keep it if they are correct.
- solving word problems using groups of $1, $5, $10, $20 dollar bills in pictures.
EX: If I have two $1, four $5, and one $10, how much money do I have?
If I want to buy a video game that cost $48, how much more money do I need if I already have two $10s?
- creating and using picture and bar graphs.
*Math 2.2 (Adv)-UNIT 5: Understanding Plane and Solid Figures
- fractions, focusing on drawing and recognizing fourths, thirds, and halves and remembering that they are not fractions unless they are divided into EQUAL SHARES.
-partitioning rectangles into equal rows and columns (arrays) to create a given number of boxes.
Ex: draw as many different arrays as you can with 24 boxes…
2 rows, 12 columns 3 rows, 8 columns

- creating and using picture and bar graphs.
*Social Studies- We continue to learn about Native Americans next week. We are learning about how they survived using things from nature. Over the next couple of weeks, we will compare and contrast the lives of the Cherokee to that of the Creek, as well as ourselves. We will also learn about other historical figures that impacted the lives of the Native Americans (Mary Musgrove, Tomachichi and James Oglethorpe). Students will be creating time lines to illustrate understanding of when and how they lived.
*Health- After the morning news, we have been watching videos from Class Dojo all about Growth Mindset! These videos will help us grow our brain just like we would grow a muscle. Students will be reflecting on these videos soon!
*Reading- This week we began our sequencing unit. Students are practicing putting steps in the correct order. The children are also learning the importance of knowing and telling stories, events, and actions in the correct order, such as a recipe or directions to your home.
*Writing/Grammar- This week students continued to work on their “All About” books and learned new ways to catch their reader’s attention! The informational rubric for 2nd grade states, “The writer wrote a beginning in which he/she named a subject and tried to interest readers.” The 3rd grade rubric states, “The writer wrote a beginning in which he/she got readers ready to learn a lot of information about a subject.” Ask your child to tell you what they are writing about, and how they plan to catch their reader’s attention. Next week we will continue adding details and checking our work with a checklist.
We will have our next spelling test on Thursday November 8th. Your child should have received their new spelling words today.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Henschel and Barbra Mitchell
