Dear Parents,

Notes for this week:

*Winter parties – Wednesday, December 19th; you should be receiving information about times and volunteers from our room coordinators soon!

*Friday, Dec. 21st – No school; Winter break begins!

FAST FACTS:

Dec. 10th: Doubles + 1

Dec. 17th: Make a ten

After Winter Break: we will begin subtraction. It is a good idea to start practicing now. A great strategy is thinking of a related addition fact you know. EX: 10-7=____ , Think of ___+7=10

*Math 2.1 (on)- UNDERSTANDING MEASUREMENT, LENGTH, & TIME

-Students learned about whole hours and half hours when telling time this past week.

-We will continue to practice telling time using fractions of time such as 5, 10 and 15 minutes after the hour (1:00, 1:05, 1:10, 1:15, 1:20).

- What are activities we do in the A.M. and P.M.?

*Math 2.2 (Adv)- Unit 6- DEVELOPING MULTIPLICATION

-The students are practicing skills we have been learning during this unit. (relating arrays, repeated addition and multiplication, how do you know if a number is even or odd, taking a survey, and creating a bar graph for a purpose)

*Science-Erosion PBL

-This week Ms. Lemerond presented the students with a problem. How do we keep Shakerag from losing ground? Students observed the erosion taking place on our playground. This week we learned more about factors that affect our environment (floods, erosion and drought) Students viewed photos of these environmental problems and discussed how they occur and how can we prevent them in the future.

-Ask your student how they plan to fix our erosion problem.

*Reading- In reading this week, we dove into our PBL by reading books about erosion and how plants, animals and humans can affect the world around them! Next week, we will continue learning about character development, and how a character may change due to events throughout a story.

*Writing/Grammar- This week we reviewed what Writer’s Workshop should look like in our classroom. Students are encouraged to write during the entire block, independently. We also discussed emotions that our characters might feel and how to sketch notes at the top of every page of our stories to stretch out our writing and have room for lots of detail.

Stay safe and warm this weekend!
