Dear Parents,

We have had another great week in 2nd grade!

Notes for this week:

*Inclement Weather Update- will be coming home in your child’s folder today (or Monday). Please complete and return no later than Dec. 15th.

* As the weather begins to get cooler, and students are wearing coats/jackets, it isextremely helpful if your child’s name is written inside.

*6:30 pm tonight- Shakerag Movie Night: The Incredibles 2

*Signed papers were sent home. Please sign and return slip keeping all papers attached.

MATH FAST FACT QUIZZES: Start Monday Dec 3rd. Please refer to “Fast Facts” Letter for details.

*Math 2.1 (on)-UNIT 3: Understanding Measurement, Length, and Time

-We completed Unit 2 and will begin Unit 3: Understanding Measurement, Length and Time. Check our website https://tinyurl.com/ShakeragSecondGrade for the parent letter giving an overview of the standards for this unit with examples. UNIT 3- UNDERSTANDING MEASUREMENT, LENGTH, & TIME starts next week

*Math 2.2 (Adv)- Unit 6- DEVELOPING MULTIPLICATION

- Check our website https://tinyurl.com/ShakeragSecondGrade for the parent letter giving an overview of the standards for this unit with examples.

This week:

- relating arrays, repeated addition and multiplication

Example: 3x5 means: 3 groups of 5 5+5+5 3 rows of 5

*Social Studies- Unit 3: Native Georgians – The Cherokee

Ask your child…

-How did Sequoyah change life for the Cherokee People? (hint: written symbols)

-Why did he think it was important to have a way to write things down? (hint: share and keep information, keep and teach customs)

-How did he prove to the Cherokee council that his way of writing worked? (hint: his daughter helped)

-What is an example of how he showed perseverance? (it took a long time to create, there was a fire)

*Science-Changes to the Earth (starts next week)

-Mrs. Lemerond challenged us today to come up with ideas to find solutions to the erosion around our school. In order to do this, we will first have to learn about possible causes for changes to the earth. We will be researching, experimenting and discovering in both Science and Reading as we complete this Project Based Learning unit.

*Reading- In reading, we have begun learning about character traits and telling the difference between inside traits and outside traits. For example, an inside trait would be a character’s thoughts, and an outside trait could be what a character was wearing. We also discussed how a character’s traits can change throughout the story as a result of events that occurred and what the character experienced.

Next week, we will pause our character trait reading unit to dive into our Changes to the Earth Project-Based-Learning unit. We are very excited to kick off this PBL and see our students even more excited about science and non-fiction reading!

*Writing/Grammar- In writing, we have begun our “Gripping Narratives” unit. Students are beginning to write stories with tension (keeping their reader on the edge of their seat) and problems/solutions. We have read some stories with characters who are confronted with problems they have to work through to find a solution, such as Too Many Tamales.

We will have our next spelling test Thursday, December 6th. Your child should have their new words today!

Please be sure your student is completing their spelling and reading homework.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Barbra Mitchell & Rebecca Henschel
